About the Opportunity
RSS (Services) Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Royal Statistical Society that delivers the society’s commercial activities that include training, our jobs board and some other smaller activities. All profits from the company go to supporting the charitable aims of the Society. This is an exciting opportunity to become involved with a vibrant community of individuals who are looking to diversify their Director team and fill in gaps in their skill base.

This role offers the opportunity to help develop the commercial activities in a variety of ways. Our current focus is to:

  • Expand our business to help create financial stability
  • Explore the potential to create new business ventures
  • Develop how we message our offering to our community
  • Look at ways to reach new markets both in the UK and internationally
The Directors are responsible for the legal obligations of the company and meet three times a year, usually over Teams.

We are looking for an individual who is willing to lend their skills and experience to support the development of our commercial activities, and ultimately furthering the charitable impact of the RSS. The commitment can be flexible in terms of time commitment and nature of the involvement, and we will aim to support both your needs. As a minimum you will be expected to attend the Director’s meetings; ideally we are looking for someone who is interested in investing their marketing and commercial experience in developing the business through provision of advice and guidance to staff.

Main tasks:
  • Reviewing financial information to support the continued good financial performance of the business
  • Learning about the business and its activities
  • Supporting the Directors and Management Teams in the key focus areas detailed in About the Opportunity
  • Supporting decision making at Director level
  • Attending Director’s meetings
  • Providing advice and guidance relevant to personal experience and skills set – either through meetings with staff or review of documents (for examples strategies and business plans)
Experience we are looking for:
We would be particularly interested in people with the following:
  • Experience in running a commercial business
  • Experience in developing products and services to meet user needs
  • Experience in marketing commercial activities particularly digital marketing and social media
  • Financial management experience

Benefits:
  • Use your career experience to ‘give back’ to a charity with an important societal mission
  • Become a valued part of a friendly team of like-minded people who are all working towards a common goal and supporting one another
  • Gain confidence and experience. We will support you to thrive in your role and gain experience that helps you in your career
  • Volunteer work is a great thing to add to your CV as it shows potential employers that you have dedicated your time and effort to a role without monetary benefit, and that your skills and experience are valued
How to Apply:
Please apply in writing to Stuart McKendrick at s.mckendrick@rss.org.uk
Please include in your application:
  • Name and contact details including home address
  • Details of any disability that we need to know about and any adaptations that would enable you to engage with us easier
  • A statement covering
    • why you would like to become a volunteer Director
    • what skills and experience you can bring, and how these align with the focus areas above
    • how you expect to benefit from volunteering for the RSS
    • ideas that you think we could develop with you to improve our work
