Statistical issues in child protection

Public debate about child protection – placing children perceived to be vulnerable on a register or taking them into care – is repeatedly reinforced by cases that suggest that the existing systems are not working well. This debate is not, however, as well-informed as it might be if quantitative evidence and statistical issues were further to the fore. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss, from a range of perspectives, the available evidence and its implications for the important decisions that have to be taken about children’s futures.
