Who we are

The RSS Social Statistics Section arranges an annual programme of meetings on social statistics and survey methodology. These meetings are for discussions, demonstrations or the reading of papers. The Section Committee may also form study groups for the examination and study of particular problems.

The terms 'social statistics' and 'survey methodology' are interpreted in a broad sense:

  • Social statistics covers statistics of all aspects of society, and statistical methods that are applicable within the field of social enquiry.
  • Survey methodology covers all aspects of the methodology of carrying out quantitative surveys - not just statistical methodology. This includes, for example, data collection and data processing procedures.
The section aims to provide a forum for the dissemination and discussion of issues, ideas, theories, methods, and substantive findings. The main means by which this is achieved is through the programme of meetings.  The remit and activities of the Section are also likely to be of interest to many people who would not consider themselves primarily (or at all) as 'statisticians' and are not members of the Section. We encourage such people to get involved in its activities.
