JOINING INSTRUCTIONS FOR
CONFERENCE DELEGATES
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Royal Statistical Society Conference at Manchester from the 7th to 10th Sept. First a couple of requests:
1. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU BOOKED INTO ACCOMMODATION AT OWENS PARK (Standard) OR RICHMOND PARK (Ensuite) AND ARE ARRIVING BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 22.00hrs AND 8.00hrs. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PICK UP KEYS FROM OWENS PARK RECEPTION, BUT WE NEED TO ADVISE THEM OF OUT OF HOURS ARRIVALS.
2. PLEASE INFORM US IMMEDIATELY OF ANY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS SUCH AS DIET OR NEED FOR WHEELCHAIR ACCESS IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.
Below we offer a few pieces of advice and joining details. Other information will be in your welcome packs..
On the Tuesday you should arrive at Owens Park. The short courses are being held there as is the evening programme and welcome dinner. The accommodation is either in Owens Park or the adjacent Richmond Park. There is ample car parking. The short courses are scheduled from 10.30 to 17.00. Full conference registration opens at 16.00 and the programme begins at 19.15 with a plenary lecture by Chris Wild.
On the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the conference will be held in the Roscoe and Schuster Buildings on Brunswick Street in the University's main campus (Nos 43 and 44 on the Campus Map). The registration desk opens in the Roscoe Foyer at 9.00 and the plenary lecture by Jay Kadane begins at 9.30 in Roscoe Lecture Theatre A. Bus passes for Finglands buses will be provided for participants to travel between Owens Park and the University. Car parking at the University can be very difficult, especially as there are a number of events on in the week of Sept 6th related to the merger of the University with UMIST.
Registration desks will available at Owens Park on the Tuesday and in the Foyer of the Roscoe Building on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Owens Park has a 24 hour reception which will issue room keys etc. to those arriving out of hours with accommodation booked in either Owens Park or Richmond Park.
Travel to Owens Park (293 Wilmslow Road, Manchester, M14 6HD). Attached is a map showing all the University halls of residence. Owens Park is No 26 and Richmond Park no. 37 on the map. The postal address of Owens Park is 293 Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield, Manchester M14 6HD. Putting the postcode M14 6HD into www.multimap.com will provide you with a variety of maps on different scales.
Arrival by train. Catch a train to Manchester Piccadilly. Please note there are major works on the West Coast mainline at present and that these are due to complete a couple of days before the conference. Please check with rail enquiries to ensure that you have the appropriate times of trains for your travel. At the station either take a taxi and ask for Owens Park, Fallowfield or walk to Piccadilly Gardens (about 0.5km) where there are many buses and catch one to Fallowfield. It will stop outside Owens Park. Possible Buses are 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 48. At Piccadilly Gardens there are notices indicating which stands the buses goes from.
Arrival by Plane. Take a taxi or take the train into Manchester and follow above instructions. There are also buses from the Airport (e.g. No 43) to Fallowfield and they stop outside Owens Park.
Arrival by Car. (N.b. you can get a route map from www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_main.jsp - the destination postcode is M14 6HD). Drive into Manchester on the M56/A5103. (if not travelling from the south, follow the M60 ring Road until you get to the A5103 and take the exit into Manchester. After a couple of miles, turn left onto Wilbraham Road (A6010). Continue on this eventually crossing Wilmslow Road. Take the first left after Wilmslow Road into Chancellor’s Way and signed to the Armitage Centre, University Sports Fields and the Richmond Park. Follow signs to the car park at Richmond Park. [Note: you cannot get into visitor car parking via the entry into Owens Park on Wilmslow Road. You must make for Chancellor’s Way.]
Travel to Manchester University. A campus map is attached. The post code for Multimap (www.multimap.com) is M13 9PL. The conference is in the Roscoe and Schuster Buildings on Brunswick Street.
By Train/Taxi. Fare from Piccadilly Train Station approx £4-5.00. Fare from Manchester Airport approx £12.00.
By Train/ Bus. From Piccadilly Train Station walk to Piccadilly Gardens Bus Station and take one of the following buses: 14, 16, 41, 42, 43, 43a, 44, 45a, 48, 111, 140, 142, 157, 250.
From Oxford Road Station, go down the station approach to Oxford Road and turn right. The University is a ten minute walk away. Alternatively, buses stop outside the Palace Hotel.
We do not recommend that you plan on parking at the main University Campus.
