Web Editor, The Royal Statistical Society

Hours: full time permanent position – 35 hours per week

Responsible to: Web and Multimedia Manager

Salary package: circa £25,000 per annum, generous pension scheme, 25 days holiday + closure over Christmas period, season ticket loan

The Royal Statistical Society (RSS) is one of the world's most distinguished and renowned statistical societies.  It is both a learned society for statistics and a professional body for statisticians.  It was founded in 1834 and currently the Society has more than 7000 members around the world and has about 20 permanent staff.  The RSS is active in a wide range of areas both directly and indirectly relevant to the study and application of statistics.

The Society is based in a light and airy Victorian building in Errol Street, near the Barbican Centre.  As well as providing office space for our Society business we have the additional bonus of a number of meeting rooms which are used for both our internal meetings and hiring out externally to private clients.

As part of our strategy to provide an excellent communications service to both our members, potential members and external stakeholders, we are looking seeking an excellent candidate to complement our Web and Multimedia team as Web Editor.

This is an interesting and varied new role based in a friendly working environment. You will be working across all the Society’s websites, including a new magazine site to be launched in the autumn, and the Significance website which complements the Society’s prestigious outreach magazine of the same name.

 

Web Editor: main duties of the role

  • Overall responsibility for relevant, timely, topical and consistent web site content across the RSS and Significance websites
  • Build, maintain and manage a global group of volunteer web contributors (including recruitment, training, regular liaison) to ensure a continuous supply of articles, daily in the case of Significance
  • Commission different types of content, including news stories, features, opinion pieces and member-specific news
  • Work with the Web and Multimedia Manager and under the Significance Editor to ensure coherence in web-based information delivery
  • Liaise with staff and volunteers to ensure content is relevant to the specific audiences
  • Editing and subbing copy ready for publication
  • Cross promotion of articles across web platforms and the Significance print magazine
  • Editorial responsibility for images and written content
  • Editorial responsibility for social and audio-visual media content
  • Responsibility for moderating  comments on websites
  • Occasional writing of web-based copy


Web Editor: person specification

Essential

  • Educated to at least degree level or equivalent 
  • Experience of writing for the web
  • Ability to deliver work to strict deadlines and in line with technical web standards
  • Ability to deliver accurate material
  • A pro-active approach to sourcing relevant news material
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop effective relationships 
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Experience of working with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Experience of web publishing

Desirable

  • Understanding and knowledge of the statistics, policy and science agendas would be a considerable advantage
  • Understanding and knowledge of the media landscape and infrastructure
  • Understanding and knowledge of social media
  • Ability to analyse and interpret numerical data and incorporate these into stories

Honorary Officers for Education and Publications Themes

Suggestions are sought for two theme directors/honorary officers for the Education and Publications themes. The two Honorary Officers will lead and coordinate the work of either the respective Themes.  Theme directors are responsible for:

  • taking a strategic overview of the theme, advising and reporting to Council as appropriate
  • working with the Theme Managers to formulate a business plan for the theme, to form part of the overall business plan of the Society
  • establishing support and consultation structures to provide information, advice and assistance in implementation of policy
  • implementing the agreed activity plan in their theme
  • evaluating the effectiveness of the Society’s work in the theme area
