Attend and contribute to the discussions at Ordinary Meetings of the Society

Share your expertise:

Become a media contact and contribute to one of our websites supporting our campaigns.

Help the RSS work with the media by giving general advice/commenting on statistical issues:

Journalists contact the Society from time to time for general advice or comment on a broad range of statistical issues. The Society would like to extend its list of Fellows who might respond to such requests. Experience of working with the media is an advantage

To become a media contact, email Andrew Garratt.

Contribute to Significance magazine or website:

The Significance website – www.significancemagazine.org is there to tell the public about statistics, and you can get involved as a contributor.  If you hear a news item where statistics are badly reported, or where the statistics behind it could do with expanding or explaining – then write a short piece, of 300-800 words, and send it to us at significance@rss.org.uk. We will post it on the site quickly. It is a quick and easy way to share your own knowledge with the outside world. And if you’d like to write regularly – once a month, once a fortnight or once a week – let us know; you would be very welcome.

The Significance print magazine is the RSS publication that aims to present statistics in an interesting and entertaining way to statisticians and non-statisticians alike. If you have an idea for an article, contact the editor at significance@rss.org.uk. See also the author guidelines.

RSS-getstats campaign

We want more people to have the statistical understanding and skills we all need to solve problems and make good decisions, for bothourselves and our families. We are reaching out to the public via the getstats blog and a bank of practical resources as well as people like parliamentarians, the media, teachers and employers. Activities include holding talks in schools, seminars in parliament, providing training for journalists as well as guidelines for governors, police and crime commissioners. There is plenty of opportunity to get involved, from writing for the getstats blog to helping with training. .

Statistics User Engagement

Play an active part in user engagement – sign up to StatsUserNet, the RSS’s interactive website for all users of official statistics. The site aims to encourage discussion between users and producers of official statistics; provides a platform where producers can consult on proposed changes and developments; and enables users to share experiences and knowledge with each other. Over 1,500 members have already signed up, from a wide range of sectors, including central and local government, academia, business, the voluntary sector and the general public.

There are several communities, discussing high profile topics related to measurement of inflation, national well-being, health, welfare and benefits. You can volunteer to help take forward the activities of existing groups and communities, and suggest setting up new communities if your area of interest is not already covered. For further information, contact statsusernet@rss.org.uk.
