Hetan Shah
Executive Director
Hetan is responsible for the overall strategy and management of the Royal Statistical Society on behalf of the trustees. His previous roles have included running the national charity ‘Think Global’ and senior think tank roles. He has written extensively on public policy issues and his co-authored publications include ‘Behavioural Economics: seven principles for policymakers’ and ‘A New Political Economy’. His interests include evidence based policymaking, international development, sustainability and measures of progress.
Hetan is a non-executive director of the Equality Trust, a research body looking at inequality in the UK. Hetan was also appointed as an Honorary Vice-President of the Geographical Association in 2011.
Hetan has a first degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He has postgraduate qualifications in Economics and in History. He is also a trained lawyer and upon qualification practiced in the City.
Nicola Emmerson
Director of Operations
Nicola is the Director of Operations at the Royal Statistical Society, with responsibility for the management of all aspects of membership administration, member benefit delivery and the coordination of internal operational processes. Nicola has held a variety of roles during her career at the Society, including developing the venue hire and event business and managing the launch of Significance magazine, both of which remain integral areas of her portfolio. Before joining the Society, Nicola worked for a number of voluntary sector organisations and has since gained a Master's degree in voluntary sector management.
Roeland Beerten
Director of Professional and Public Affairs
Roeland is responsible for the management of the professional and external facing activities of the Society. His portfolio includes oversight of RSS professional activities (professional awards, examinations, course accreditations and CPD) and public affairs, including statistical education, policy development, external communications and public relations. Before taking up this position he worked in various roles at the Office for National Statistics. Having studied social statistics and survey methodology he started his career as a researcher at the University of Leuven, Belgium, where he carried out research on voting behaviour and social and political attitudes.
David Walker
Getstats Director
David is a journalist by background and was formerly managing director, public reporting at the Audit Commission, editor of Guardian Public and chief leader writer for The Independent. He has a longstanding interest in social science and, a member of the council of the Economic & Social Research Council, chairs its methods and infrastructure committee. He is a non-executive director of the Central & North West London NHS Foundation Trust. With Polly Toynbee he wrote The Verdict - did Labour change Britain, published by Granta in 2010
