Bayesian Adaptive Methods for Clinical Trials
RSS 2012 pre-conference course at the Telford International Centre
Presenter: Scott Berry (Berry Consultants)
This full-day course focuses on the innovative uses of Bayesian statistics in clinical trials. The application of Bayesian statistics to flexible adaptive trials is becoming a powerful innovation within the clinical trials industry. The course will focus on the specific strengths of the Bayesian approach and present numerous examples of trials in phase I, II, and III in the clinical trials space. Examples from a wide variety of theapeutic areas such as cardiovascular, neurology, pain, oncology, and others will be discussed. The course will present examples from drugs and devices.
The course will discuss the use of the Bayesian approach, the software needs for using the Bayesian approach and for building adaptive trials, the receptivity of these approaches as well as the advantages and hurdles to the use of adaptive trials and Bayesian statistics.
By the end of the course participants will understand the strengths of a Bayesian approach in clinical trials, the strengths of adaptation, and how to design and adaptive trial. A better understanding of the computational needs, and effort required to design adaptive trials.
Scott Berry is President and Senior Statistical Scientist at Berry Consultants. Since 2000 he has been involved in the design of innovative and adaptive clinical trials in drugs, devices, and biologics. He has been the lead architect in over 100 complex adaptive designs. His short courses have been recognized at previous JSM events. His research interests are in Bayesian methods, computations, simulations, and hierarchical models. In addition to his innovative work in biostatistics he is a renowned sports statistician, with more than 40 articles, ranging from the Journal of the American Statistical Association to ESPN the Magazine.
He received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University (1994) and his BS from the University of Minnesota (1990). He spent 5 years at Texas A&M University (1995-2000) before founding Berry Consultants with Don Berry.
