Primary Health Care Statistics Study Group

Remit of the group

In July 2002, a study group focusing on statistics in primary health care was formed. This has taken place against a background of increasing research interest in the primary health care sector.

The principal aims of the study group are to:

  • bring together statisticians from a wide range of backgrounds who are working or have an interest in the field of primary care;
  • provide a forum for presenting and discussing statistical work currently taking place in primary care;
  • provide a forum for discussion of some of the methodological challenges in this area which will draw on the expertise of other statisticians and researchers with relevant experience and knowledge;
  • encourage other statisticians to get involved in this area by raising the profile of statistics in primary care, and offer particular support to those beginning to work in this area for the first time;

Frequency and format of the meetings

The Primary Health Care Study Group organises a programme of meetings with a primary care medical and health related theme, aimed at a general audience with an interest in medical statistics within primary care, throughout the year. The meetings are also likely to be pertinent to health care professionals and non-statisticians.

2-3 meetings are held per annum and usually take place at the RSS, Errol Street, London but we also hold meetings in other locations as well as joint meetings with RSS local groups from around the UK. Meetings usually start at 2pm and consist of 2-3 presentations lasting 20 minutes each with 5 minutes discussion. We then have an informal discussion about the topics presented.

Attendance to meetings are free and do not need to be booked into in advance.

Email distribution list

The Primary Health Care Study Group has an email distribution list (PRIMSTAT) which is open to any person interested in statistics within primary care.

The group aims to provide a forum for discussing a wide range of issues, methods, and findings of interest to statisticians  and researchers working in medical and health related areas.
