Significance Editorial Board vacancies for both RSS and ASA nominated members
Introduction: Significance magazine
Significance is a bi-monthly magazine for anyone interested in statistics and the analysis and interpretation of data.
The aim of Significance is to communicate and demonstrate in an entertaining and thought-provoking way the practical use of statistics in all walks of life and to show how statistics benefit society.
As well as promoting the discipline and covering topics of professional relevance, Significance contains a mixture of statistics in the news, case-studies, reviews of existing and newly developing areas of statistics, and practice and problem solving techniques.
Significance is an official magazine for both the RSS and the ASA and their respective members. It is also an outreach magazine, aiming to reach members of the public beyond the community of professional statisticians.
The Editorial Board
The primary responsibility of the Editorial Board is to continue the development of Significance as a vibrant magazine and website that will appeal to a wide range of audiences.
The Editorial board consists of seventeen people including the Editor: eight members are appointed by the RSS, and eight appointed by the ASA. The Editorial Board functions as a single unit and is responsible for the editorial policy and strategy for the magazine.
Editorial Board membership is, to reasonable extent, as diverse as possible in terms of geographic location, employment sector (industry, government, academia).
Both the RSS and ASA are now looking to recruit new, energetic members for the Significance Editorial Board.
The role of an Editorial Board member requires the following commitment:
Membership of either the RSS or ASA is required of all Editorial Board members during their term of service. Each Editorial Board member will serve a three year term of office and is required to attend meetings where possible (typically May/November at the RSS office in London, and in July/August at the JSM) – it is possible to attend each of these meetings by teleconference.
Editorial Board Members are also required to participate in the on-line forum set up for managing editorial processes.
The work of an Editorial Board member:
The Editorial Board assists the Editor in identifying topics for articles. The Editor also draws on the expertise of Editorial Board members with some technical aspects of articles as and when required. Editorial Board members are expected to help identify potential authors and contacts, for the website as well as the magazine, and to have a general awareness of what is going on in the statistical world. It is also preferable for Board members to have experience writing for a general audience and to understand how to work with a professional editor in a magazine publishing environment. All members should understand and be committed to the vision of Significance as a public outreach activity of both the RSS and the ASA.
How to apply:
If you would like to be considered as a Board member, please write to Nicola Emmerson at n.emmerson@rss.org.uk giving details of how your experience meets the required criteria and what you could bring to the role (maximum of 500 words). The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday 20 July.
