Procedure for honours

Procedure for medals, prizes and honourary fellowship

  1. In March of each year an article is published in RSS News asking for nominations from Fellows.  Members of Council and the committees of Sections and Local Groups are also invited to make suggestions, by approximately 20 September, for the possible award of Guy Medals in Gold (when relevant) Silver and Bronze, a Greenfield Medal (when relevant), a Chambers Medal (when relevant), a Bradford Hill Medal, (when relevant), a West Medal (when relevant), the Research Prize (when relevant) and election to Honorary Fellowship.
  2. Each nomination must consist of a statement of the grounds on which the nomination is made, in addition to the name. Where applicable, relevant references to published work should be given. If any unpublished paper is to be taken into account, an abstract must form part of the submission. Nomination forms are available for this purpose. A shortened CV giving key information for the nominee relevant to the award under consideration should be attached to the form.
  3. The suggested names, together with any brought forward from previous years, are circulated to members of the Honours Committee (with documentation as in 2 above).
  4. By mid-October, each proposal is allocated to a member of the Committee who will brief himself/herself on that proposal. The purpose is to ensure that each proposal is fully researched so that the Committee has access to all relevant information when considering the proposal.
  5. The Committee meets in November. At the Committee meeting each proposal should be presented by the relevant member either in person or by letter. All Committee members' views carry equal weight in discussion and voting. Committee members are not committed to supporting the proposals that they have been asked to present when final decisions are taken.
  6. The Committee also decides at its meeting which proposals to carry over to the following session.
  7. The Committee's recommendations are reported to the December Council meeting. Until recipients have been informed that they are to receive an award, all recommendations must remain strictly confidential.
  8. The awards are usually presented to recipients at the Annual General Meeting in June or July.
