What qualifications are typically required?

There are several routes into a career with the Government Statistical Service.

For those joining straight from university or soon after, we are looking for those who have, or hope to obtain shortly, a first or second class honours degree in a numerate discipline: for example mathematics, statistics, operational research, economics, business studies, psychology or geography. Graduates or final year undergraduates may enter either via the fast stream selection process operated by the Civil Service Selection Board or via the GSS statistical officer recruitment scheme. These run throughout the year.

Opportunities at a more senior level are also available for those who already have work experience in a statistical field.

The Government Statistical Service also offers opportunities to those without formal degree-level qualifications, who can join the Civil Service through general recruitment and then acquire statistical skills and experience while working.
