Salaries and opportunities for advancement

Salaries for government statisticians vary between departments and locations. In central London, a fast stream entrant would normally attract a salary of over £20,000 with more available for those with some relevant work experience. The fast stream programme is designed to identify those with the potential for rapid promotion and after about five years you could be eligible for a substantive statistician post (Grade 7) with an initial salary of over £30,000 and the potential to rise to £50,000. Statistician posts in the Senior Civil Service command salaries of over £50,000.

Statistical officer posts offer a salary of around £18,000 in central London or £15,000 elsewhere and again more may be available for those with additional relevant experience. Opportunities exist for advancement to more senior statistical officer appointments which command higher salaries.

There are substantial staff benefits such as a generous annual holiday entitlement and the opportunity to join either a final salary occupational pension scheme or a money-purchase 'partnership' scheme.

Salaries for all staff are reviewed annually and vacancies for posts open to existing GSS employees are advertised regularly throughout the GSS. Promotions are made on merit and will generally involve an interview with senior GSS staff.
