What is your volunteer role at the RSS?
Committee member and treasurer of RSS West Midlands local group

What does the role involve?
As a committee we prepare the local group’s programme of activities. Being a treasurer involves accounting for the grant money allocated by RSS by providing an annual financial report to the local group committee, local group AGM and RSS.

Why did you choose this role?
To contribute to the statistics profession and for my professional development.

Has the experience been valuable for your professional development?
Yes. It shows that I am involved in external activities that promote university in the wider context.

What have you enjoyed most about volunteering with the RSS?
Meeting prominent statisticians and users of statistics.

What advice would you give to anyone interested in volunteering with the RSS?
Volunteering at the RSS is a valuable thing to do. For a relatively small-time commitment, in addition to meeting prominent statisticians and user of statistics, volunteering contributes to your professional development.

What’s next – do you plan to carry on in this role or are you tempted to try other volunteer roles?
Soon my tenureship on the local group committee will come to an end. My plan is to join one of the sections, including the committee.
